The Easter weekend had many events, but Easter Monday’s Peace Rally and Concert in the Queen’s Park Savannah put the icing on the cake. Held by The Movement for Non-Violence in collaboration with Living Waters and CNC3, and hosted by Errol Fabien and Natalie Morales, the event brought together a large turnout of people and featured some inspirational performances.
Amongst the outstanding performances were the duet by Wendell Constantine and Wendy Sheppard, Chris Garcia’s rendering of Ah Love Mihself, Johann Chuckaree’s interpretation of Michael Jackson’s We Are the World, and performances by Karene Asche, The Carters, Marcia Miranda and The Camejo Family.
It was a most pleasant sight to see families assembled, sitting on chairs and blankets, with some parents dividing their attention between the show and helping their children fly kites. All were making a statement against violence which seems to pervade our twin-island state. Balloon kites in the form of white doves, distributed by the organisers, were a popular item in the audience.
Words of inspiration and messages were delivered by representatives of various religious denominations. US-based author and motivational speaker, “Kit” Evans-Ford, held the audience enthralled as she read excerpts from her book and related her near-death experience while vacationing in the Caribbean.
Members of Living Waters brought the curtain down on the evening’s proceedings, blessed by brilliant sunshine throughout, by leading the audience in a pledge which condemned violence in every conceivable manifestation.
We Baptist Got Talent
One would think that the weekend after a long holiday weekend would be a quiet period, but no such luck. Just as last weekend ended on an inspirational note, this weekend continues in that mood tomorrow evening when the We Baptist Got Talent production will be held at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (Napa), Port-of-Spain at 6 pm.
This unique Spiritual Baptist musical talent explosion, co-patronised by Minister of Community Development, Culture & the Arts Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly and Patriarch Stephen Julien, Ecclesiastic Leader of the Spiritual Baptist Faith, will showcase the performing skills of individuals and groups of the faith. the identity of many guests is expected to pleasantly surprise patrons.
We Baptist Got Talent is a project of the TriZiLev Spiritual Baptist/Shouter Liberation Celebrations Committee and its programme will include a recognition award ceremony for all senior spiritual leaders of the faith.
SKYY Rock Festival & conference
This weekend’s entertainment actually begins at 8 am today when Schmidt Entertainment Limited (SEL) commences its Music Industry Conference & SKYY Rock Festival at SKYY View Lounge, San Fernando. This morning’s panellists are Dale L. Cox CPA and Margaret H. Cox MBA.
Kaiso Blues marks 2nd anniversary
Kaiso Blues Cafe in Newtown, the popular showplace run by the husband and wife team of Carl and Carol Jacobs, is celebrating its second anniversary in style tonight with a special show that features Pelham Goddard & Roots, plus Jason “Fridge” Seecheran, Natalie Yorke and ace pan musician Dennis Smith. Showtime is 8.30 pm.
Pan in Newtown and Arouca
With not one edition of Pan in the Countryside being held this year pan lovers are thirsty for some live steelband music. This evening has just what the doctor ordered when Concerned Individuals for Pan stages Now is the Time – Music for Change at Newtown Playboyz panyard, Tragarete Road, Newtown, at 7 pm.
When it rains it pours and there’s more beautiful, live pan music to be enjoyed tomorrow when First Citizens Supernovas Steel Orchestra hosts A Day in Surrey, on the court of Surrey Village Community Centre, via Lopinot Road, Arouca.
Being described by arranger Amrit Samaroo as “a culinary and musical feast,” food and entertainment will be the order of the day. Bar-B-Que and local dishes would be on sale at noon along with kite flying and bouncy castles for the younger ones in the family.
A cultural show will begin at 3 pm, featuring the music of parang giants San Jose Serenaders and Los Amantes de Parranderos, two-time National Calypso Monarch Chuck Gordon and much more.
So what of the pan, you may ask? Following those performances there will be wall-to-wall live pan in the form of reigning National Panorama champion Massy Trinidad All Stars, bpTT Renegades, Melodians and host band Supernovas.
Admission is free of charge and attendees are encouraged to come with their families, walk with their coolers and enjoy A Day in Surrey with Supernovas and friends.
TUCO meeting
Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (North Zone) is holding its Quarterly Meeting tomorrow, at 9 am, at the Seminar Room, First Floor, Nalis, Abercromby Street, Port-of-Spain. The parent body will hold its AGM on April 29 at the VIP Lounge of the Grand Stand, Queen’s Park Savannah, at 10 am.
Tobago Jazz Experience
The Tobago Jazz Experience starts tomorrow.
Also billed for Tobago tomorrow, from 6 pm, is Jazz in the East at the Speyside Recreational Ground. Headline acts on this gig include Morgan Heritage, Oscar B & Vibes, Adanna, X-A-Vier Edwards and Clifton Yeates.
The festival continues on Sunday afternoon, from 4 pm, and on stage will be Incert Coin, Orange Sky, Spectral Vibes, Blood Red Clover, Checklist, Hatchling, Buck, Cosmic Rebel, Sidekick Envy and Creole Rock.

The 2017 Point Fortin Borough Celebrations begins tomorrow with the Football Festival & RhythmRama at the Sherwin Julien Recreation Ground, Point Fortin, from 6 pm.
Echo of Africa at Queen’s Hall
Queen’s Hall is the venue for tomorrow’s Echo of Africa dance production being staged by the National Dance Association of T&T at 6.30 pm.
Women in Jazz
The 2017 edition of Women in Jazz – Tribute to Patti Rogers continues at 8.30 pm, at Fiesta Plaza, MovieTowne, Port-of-Spain, headlined by Rachel Mya Scott.
Scott is the youngest performer to ever grace the stage in the Women in Jazz series. This young, gifted and talented vocalist started off performing with the acapella group Melodyne and is now a student at The Academy of The Performing Arts under the tutelage of the amazing Leah Brown. Mya, as she is more commonly known, has recently done a one-woman show entitled Solace where she also performed a number of gospel hits.
D’Breakfast Party
In the wee hours of Sunday morning, Pride Entertainment T&T will hold D’Breakfast Party, at Irwin Park, High Street, Siparia, at three o’clock, featuring Benjai and Sekon Star, as well as DJs Ezel & John Boy and Lurbz.
National String Festival Concert
The weekend’s entertainment package ends on a tranquil note on Sunday evening at Naparima Bowl, Paradise Pasture San Fernando when the Court Street Chamber Orchestra holds its 2017 National String Festival Concert at 6 pm.
Featuring the creme de la creme in pan, this event is being headlined by Len “Boogsie” Sharpe, Ken Professor” Philmore, Duvonne Stewart, Dane Gulston Pan Family, Codrington Pan Family, Martin Cain Pan Family, De Orginal De Fosto Himself, Impulse, Kenny J, Oscar B, Adrian Philbert, Gary Cordner and more.
