Turtle Beach by Rex Resort will offer fans a live open-air concert and back-in-times crossover Beach Jazz brunch party on April 29 and 30 as an added entertainment spectacle to the Tobago Jazz Experience, with music from a varied cast of top Caribbean and local musicians. They’ll fill two days of Tobago Beach Jazz on the best beach location, Courland Bay, nestled between Turtle Beach by Rex Resorts and the Heritage Park in Black Rock.
Tomorrow, the concert kicks off at 11 am with Tobago’s own jazz ensemble Caribbean INXS starting this musical journey to usher in a renowned star cast featuring Barbadian saxophonist Arturo Tappin, La Brea jazz diva Vaughnette Bigford and veteran trumpeter Errol Ince who will direct, for the first time on a local stage, a 20-piece jazz orchestra.
With the organisers’ commitment to showcase and help develop local talent, Saturday’s show will also feature a University of T&T (UTT) festival band comprised of veteran and upcoming musicians and singers.
As well, Tobago’s Kay Alleyne will perform alongside Dax Carter, Errol Ince, Ajala and others—and the audience will also be treated with the surprise opportunity of seeing the return to the stage, after 25 years, of renowned local producer Carl “Beaver” Henderson.
Sunday Beach Jazz brunch party starts from 10 am with Caribbean INXS, followed by a new dimension to the Jazz Experience, as fans are taken back through the years of jazz dance hits by Beach House director DJ CPOP and Japanese DJ and UTT sound engineer Katz Imai.
Turtle Beach by Rex Resort has developed a special menu for both days, and will also offer drinks for sale throughout—but patrons will be allowed to bring their own (personal) coolers into the venue until 2 pm.
To enhance the natural scenery, designer Marlon Darbeau—part of the Beach Jazz production team—will create a special setting for this signature beach event against the backdrop of the Caribbean Sea.
This collaboration has brought together various industry stalwarts to deliver a musical experience: music and sound extraordinaire Carl “Beaver” Henderson; Turtle Beach by Rex Resorts (pillar in the Tobago hotel industry); Beach House Entertainment; and telecommunication giant bMobile.

TAWO celebrates woman
Last Saturday was a special one when the Traditional Afrikan Women’s Organisation (TAWO) hosted its annual International Women’s History Month celebration, themed Recognising Our Warrior Women, at Palmiste Street, Morvant. Among the women honoured was Dr Carol James who was given the 2017 Harriet Tubman/Claudia Jones Award.
TAWO president Akende Rudder was the perfect host, making all guests feel right at home. The evening’s programme included a libation, poetry and spoken word, drumming by a mix of young and elder drummers, vocal performances and lots of food. James was particularly thankful to Rudder for the eloquent delivery on her life history.
In appreciation, James said: “On behalf of each member of my family and on my own behalf, I wish to express sincere gratitude to all present and all who contributed to the deeply moving and well appreciated award ceremony yesterday from the Traditional Afrikan Women’s Organisation (TAWO).
“I felt privileged to accept the accolades, blessings and gift on behalf of my mother, Edna Zephyrina Frederick Ward, a woman of worth, a true warrior woman and my 14 grandchildren, especially the newest three, Jahannah, Zianne and Cheikh, all gifted to the family during 2016.
“I will forever treasure the memory of the spiritually uplifting enstooling ceremony, the gift of the stool and the warmth and genuine two-way flow of love I felt throughout.”
